Service intervals on the P2, P3 and SPA platforms: what to know

Service · 15.10.2026 · 7 min

Volvo has built most of its cars over the last 25 years on three main platforms. On the P2 platform (S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC90, 1998–2014), it's worth watching the car's age alongside its mileage — on older engines, fluids and hoses age even while the car sits still. The P3 platform (S60, V60, S80, V70, XC60, XC70, 2006–2018) brought a more precise service indicator that factors in driving style and climate. The SPA platform (XC90, XC60, S90, V90, S60, V60, from 2015) is the newest and relies heavily on the car's own calculated service interval.

The manufacturer's rule of thumb is to service by whichever comes first — the mileage limit or the time interval. That means a rarely driven car still needs a service at least once every year or two, because oil and coolant age even when the car isn't moving. The exact interval shows up on the car's own service indicator or in a VIDA diagnostic read-out, which displays the manufacturer-set next date or mileage.

Here, every service starts with a VIDA/DiCE diagnostic that shows exactly what that specific car needs — not a generic table. That way we never do more, or less, than is actually necessary.
